Here at I-G we love AMGs. The sound alone is worth the price of admission so when we get some details on a new one we are pretty excited. Now the SL63 isn’t all new, but it’s certainly been reworked. Mercedes says the SL63 is going to be lighter, more powerful, and get 30% better fuel economy. Now I’m not sure who buys a six figure luxury rocket and worries about fuel economy but apparently there are some.
Here’s a nice graphical break down of the car.

The SL63 is going to come available with two power levels. The base level 5.5L twin turbo (biturbo) will give you 530hp, but you can get the optional AMG power pack for 557hp. You’re going to want that. Torque is a monumental 590lb-ft on the base and an orbit changing 664lb-ft on the AMG pack. Torque peaks at an early 2000RPMs and that peak runs all the way to 4500rpms. God bless turbos. That basically means you get all of the torque everywhere which will make for a hoof full of fun any time you put your foot down. This is why we love AMGs.
The car uses light weight materials like aluminum, carbon fiber, and other parts to keep it light. Curb weight is still around 4k lbs but with all that torque you’ll never know it. The clever use of a start stop feature will help you save fuel when you aren’t moving and all those light weight parts will help too. MB figures you’ll get about 23 mpgs combined which doesn’t sound like much until you consider you are driving a rocket ship.
The SL63 comes with AMGs 7 speed speedshift transmission with manual mode allowing you to shift with the paddles or a full auto for cruising. All this means a 0-60 in about 4 seconds. Of course it all comes with all the luxury you’d expect from a high end Mercedes. Look for the SL63 AMG late this year. Long live monster torque!
