Earth Day tips for car lovers

I read an article earlier about things you can do on Earth Day to save the environment when you drive. Of course this was driven by a car hating hippie so it included things like switching to an electric car, using public transit, biking to work, or even walking. I don’t like expensive slow cars, hobos, sweating, or physical exertion so I thought that list was pretty stupid. That got me thinking, what car guy things can we do to help mother earth?

First off get your car tuned. Stock tunes from the factory are horribly inefficient and you’d be shocked at just how much fuel efficiency can be gained by a simple tune.

Let’s take that a step further. Things like the stock exhaust manifold, cat, and stock exhaust piping can be very restrictive and rob you of fuel economy and fun. Replacing this and tuning can net you more gains in the efficiency area. Note: removing your cat is all kinds of illegal don’t do it. 😉

You could also start spraying nitrous or methanol into your engine. Again with a good tune and a nice set up you could net some extra “efficiency.” Now obviously you’d only spray at full throttle but more power means you need full throttle for a shorter time which means you save fuel.

Don’t over look weight savings. Take all the junk out of your car you don’t need, and if you aren’t worried about it being loud on the inside start taking out body panels, sound damping, and other things you don’t need. The benefit here is not only better fuel economy but a quicker and better handling car.

Lastly if you are a hybrid owner get rid of it. Your car is literally killing mother earth. From start to finish everything it takes to build a Prius to the time a Prius meets the scrap yard takes way more resources then a Hummer. Hybrid owners you are literally killing our planet. I hope you are happy. You should be ashamed of yourself, and not just because your cars suck but because they are killing poor sweet old mother nature.

So there you go, some quick easy tips for saving mother earth through motoring here on Earth Day.

The Sunday Drive

The Sunday Drive is as American as apple pie and for good reason. American’s love cars. I’ve heard several people say and read several blogs that say the Sunday drive is dead. That’s just simply not true. Sure high fuel prices, busy life styles, and tighter budgets have surely cramped the Sunday drive’s style a bit but I’m pleased to tell you the Sunday drive is still a tradition observed by many.

My fondest memories growing up are of Sunday drives. The earliest drives I remember are with my Dad going to visit my Grandfather. Grandpa lived on the farm maybe a half hour from home and we’d pile into my Dad’s 57 Mercury Monterrey and head out. We’d go pick up my Grandpa and go “tour the old country.” Which was the area he grew up maybe an hour from our house. I loved it, I loved hearing the stories, seeing the country side, and I loved everything about that car. Sadly when my Grandpa died so did the Sunday Drive temporarily.

However it wasn’t but a few years when my other Grandpa and Grandma started wanting to go for Sunday drives. So by this point it would be my Dad, Mom, Grandparents, and myself crammed into whatever we had at the time, I’m thinking an Olds Cutlass Supreme and we’d go for a cruise and eat dinner at this place that served catfish maybe an hour or so away. (It seems everything is an hour away from here.) That Sunday tradition lived on until I was off to college. In fact it still carried on just often times without me. Sadly by the time I finished college my Grandparents health was fading and the Sunday tradition seemingly died for good. Of course I was also an adult now and doing adult things with work, friends, girlfriends, etc and I think I partly didn’t make time for it. I always missed it though.

Now in my thirties it seems a good time to do what my Dad did with his Dad which is go for drives. So we’ve begun that and the Sunday drive has been reborn. It’s something we do atleast a couple times a month and it usually involves a cruise to the catfish restaurant, through “the old country” and a stop at my uncles is usually involved. Sometimes he even comes along. Sometimes there is little conversation, sometimes there is a lot of conversation, there is almost always road farming. (We are farmers and thus have to make sure everyone else if farming correctly. 🙂 ) Whatever the trip is like the Sunday Drive has become an activity that I cherish and look forward to now more then ever as I grow older and realize our time is limited.

I never intended Infinite-Garage to be a place where I shared personal stories and I may never share another again, but the deeper I dive into car culture I realize how personal it is. It’s things like the Sunday drive, working on a car with your Dad, or your friends, or racing with your buddies that make this hobby so great. It’s the personal connections that drive what makes this hobby so great. So as corny and cheesy as this may sound take a second to take in the personal side of this hobby. I’d love to hear your Sunday drive stories, or your more personal stories about the car hobby. I’d love to share them with the world. So often the car world is about competition, who has the right rims, look, motor, or drive train, and too often we forget what makes this hobby really special. So if you have a personal story, build, project, or something you’d just like to share with us hit us up on facebook, or email us at theinfinitegarage@gmail.com

The Lamborghini Urus

I suppose if you are going to have an SUV you might as well have a Lamborghini. Details are a bit scant at this point but it’s on the same platform as the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. It will probably be V10 powered, other then that we don’t know yet.

Chevy makes a documentary on the trip to Camaro5 fest

Chevy has done well with the new Camaro drawing in not only old Camaro fans but a new breed of muscle car enthusiast as well. So Chevy is going to promote the Camaro in any way it can. So they stalked a group of 150 Camaro owners as they headed out to Camaro5 fest last year. This video is what they captured.

Warning, if you don’t like horsepower, tire smoke, and general bad assery you probably won’t want to watch the video.

NJ Grand Prix could be postponed, France coming back.

In sad and not so surprising news it looks like the Grand Prix of New Jersey or whatever they’ll call it might get postponed. This is according to Bernie Eccelstone. The other big news is the French Grand Prix may be coming back which sounds good right? I mean if you are going to race in France it’s going to be in Magny-Cours which is a pretty awesome track. But wait, nothing makes sense in Bernie land the French GP will be at the Paul Richard Circuit. Now F1 has raced there before a very long time ago and it’s not a bad circuit so I probably shouldn’t complain but this next bit of news should make any F1 fan angry. The French GP will alternate years with Spa. Ok I officially hate Bernie now. The best track on the calender, best race of the season, one of very few with any history and now we only get it every two years? It’s time for Bernie to go.
