GM working on a deal to bring Carbon Fiber to the masses

GM has partnered with Teijen to bring the widespread use of carbon fiber to every day cars.  As many of you know, carbon fiber is a strong, lightweight, composite material used in everything from body panels, to frames, and trim work.  It’s typically been reserved for high end sports cars, super cars, and luxury vehicles.  However, we have seen it start to trickle down slowly into other less expensive cars.  GM is hoping that their new partnership with Teijen, who provides carbon fiber for many high end car builders, will bring the use of carbon fiber to every day production cars.

Carbon fiber’s strength and light weight properties are sure to be a handy tool in improving fuel economy in everything from pick up trucks to economy cars. Teijen not only brings experience to the table, but also a recent breakthrough technology in which a thermoplastic component is used instead of the traditional resin. This significantly decreases cure time to under a minute.  This will allow for the mass production of parts, which will in turn bring down the cost.

The all new SL Mercedes

copyright Mercedes Benz

The All new Mercedes Benz SL series will be hitting show rooms in the spring of 2012.  The always popular SL series gets a major reworking featuring all new more aggressive styling, new engine choices, better fuel economy, and more innovative luxury features.  Only details of the SL550 have emerged so far and it’s looking very promising.

The SL550 will get a new 4.6L V8 making 429hp and a monstrous 516lb-ft of torque.  The car is said to be more fuel efficient due to it’s stop/start eco feature as well as it’s driver adaptive 7 speed transmission.  All this will rocket the 550 to 60 is 4.5 seconds.

Mercedes is particularly proud of their “magic sky control” which is a roof that is transparent or completely black with the push of the button.  The roof of course is also retractable.

All the new features of the SL550 are sure to make it another fine piece in Mercedes collection.

More details on the Caddy ATS emerge.

As we approach autoshow season more and more info on new cars is trickling out. Today we learned that the new Cadillac ATS will have a trio of engines available on the start.  The engines will be the 2.0l turbo i4 LNF, a 2.5l NA i4 and a 3.5 V6.

The 2.0t is from the Cobalt SS turbo, skyredline, and solstice GXP.  It has a great history as a tuner engine and should provide plenty of punch.  The 3.5 V6 is GM’s old standard V6 that’s been around for ages.

Transaxles

This is the first in a series of light technical articles by Michael Adams. We will endeavour to post at least one of these per week. If you have a specific topic or car component that you’d like to see discussed / explained, please let us know.

If you’ve been following the V8 Supercar Car of the Future information the way I have, you may have noticed that one of the changes being made in 2013 is the introduction of a Transaxle unit to the car. Unsure of what a transaxle is or what it does? Keep reading.

The Transaxle is actually a relatively simple concept and a humble component development. The name of it basically gives the game away, with “Trans” from transmission and “axle” from axle. Pretty clever, hey?

To put it simply, a Transaxle is the combination of the gearbox, differential and drive axle(s) into one unit. But why would you do such a thing in the first place? What’s the point of combining them?

The Viper Returns!

Chrysler announced today that the Viper will be back in 2013, which we already knew.  However, we did not know that, starting in late 2012, they will reopen the Conner Plant near Detroit, bringing back 150 jobs. The plant is getting reworked as well.

Long live the Viper!
