Sunday Commentary: Muscle cars. Keep them original or make them what you want?

Hey look! It’s Sunday. Hopefully your weekend has been good and you got to have some fun. Thanks to the extended weekend for Veterans day, you’ll hopefully still have plenty more fun ahead of you. Speaking of Veterans day, I’d be wrong if I didn’t take the time to say thank you to all those Veterans out there. I’ve been fortunate enough to speak to a lot of Vets in my travels to car shows and one thing we always share is our love for cool old cars.

That Vette above has been a feature car before, but I don’t really have anything better for Veterans day weekend, so I thought it was appropriate. This week, we will, of course, do the week in review, I will complain about Facebook, and discuss if keep an old car original is what you should do. All that and more wrapped in photo after the jump.

WEEK IN REVIEW
Busy busy week at IG with SEMA going strong and trying to put together things for the year end awards, as well as other features coming up this winter. Our SEMA coverage was hugely popular and, thanks to USA Newspress, we had loads of images from the show. Like this awesome hi boy set up which was on the show room floor.

POWER WHEELS SHOOTOUT
Sometimes life gets a bit too serious, but thankfully Al Gore invented the internet, with things like a Power Wheels Viper vs Vette shoot out. If you didn’t miss it, it’s just another saga in the Viper Vette war that has been raging for decades now.

MOPAR Performance
Yes I know my posts favor Mopar. Get over it. 🙂 At SEMA this week, the Mopar crew announced a couple new Challenger packages. The Shaker and the 14. Both just a little bit more awesome than the average Dodge Challenger. We have info overload on those two cars, coupled with a few dozen photos, just in case reading is not your thing.

MUSCLE CARS original or modified?
I would be willing to bet that everyone reading this loves old muscle cars. It’s why I am into cars. Oh sure, I drive a modern Chevy supercharged 4 banger, but my heart is in muscle. I can tell you exactly how it happened. One Sunday, I was out for a drive with my Dad. I must have been 8 or 10 years old. I’d always heard my Dad and uncles talk about their cars growing up, but they didn’t mean much to me, except maybe I’d have a Hot Wheels version of them. Then all of a sudden, there it was! A Petty Blue Road Runner Superbird, hiding off the side of the road, by an old shed in the weeds. That moment was the moment I was bit by the classic car bug.

At some point all this madness led me to create Infinite Garage. Of course there are car guys of every walk of life and there is a car out there for every one, but one of the hottest debates going is whether to leave a car stock and original or modify it. Getting to the point, I’m a hot rodder at heart. What I want to see in a car is personal touches and effort. Anyone can go buy a factory car, but can you make that car really yours? That is what I love.

Now of course the argument will be hurting a cars value. That argument really grinds my gears because I think if someone buys a car as an investment they are in the hobby for all the wrong reasons. That is not to say you can’t buy and sell cars for profit or even be happy your old classic is worth more money today, but I just think those people are missing the point. Take the Fall Fun Run where some pretty high dollar stuff was out to play, but it was being driven. A lot of it was modified and made to the owners taste and that is cool.

This whole rant, if you will, came about when lurking on a message board. There, someone wanted to take a grill from one model year car and put it on another. The purist just threw a fit, but, in the end, many people actually posted to help the guy do what he wanted to. You see, the poster asking the question wasn’t asking if he should. He was asking HOW could he do it, because he wanted to make that car, his car. I admire that greatly. The fact is there are a million 1970 Mustangs out there and chances are, there will always be one, more showroom, than the one you have. So why not make the one you have yours.

Now if all this doesn’t make much sense, well that’s probably just typical for me. The bottom line is, it’s your car. Do what you want to it. Just don’t get uptight when someone else does something different. I’d like to hear your thoughts on the subject. You could always leave a comment below or catch us on one of our social media sites.

Week in review part II
Let’s get back on track here and get back to what we did last week.
Ford at SEMA
As it turns out Mopar wasn’t the only brand at SEMA this year. Who’da thunk it? Ford brought some goodies too and, of course, there was a Mustang in the fold.

F1
The F1 season came to a rather undramatic ending, with the champion doing what he does best. However, that did not stop us from bombarding you with photos from Abu Dhabi.

Chevy at SEMA
We led the week of with Chevy at SEMA. See, we aren’t just about Mopar. Chevy brought some new Camaros and Corvettes to tantalize the crowds at the big show and we have all the info for you incase you missed it.
