I'm trying out Need For Speed on EA Access right now. It's free on there for a few days.
This is an interesting title, in that it's both a reboot and a compilation work. Basically, EA did surveys for months and had people vote on which NFS games had the best aspects.
NFS Shift won the votes for the handling and physics. The open world environment from Rivals and actual race layouts from Most Wanted were chosen. Police presence from Hot Pursuit. Customisation from Underground 2. Soundtrack from Underground 1 and 2. Then car choices are a mix from all the NFS games(including cars not seen since NFS 1,2 and Porsche Unleashed), plus a smattering of extra ones (E30 for instance).
As such, there's an interesting mix here. It's all instantly familiar, but tied together in a way we haven't seen before. I've been skeptical about this whole "design by committee" process. It all could have been a big mashed up disaster, but from what I've seen so far, it's all pretty cohesive.
It's not the greatest game in the world. This is still an arcade racer, and the ubiquitous FMV sections are still as annoying as ever, but as long as you don't enter into it thinking you'll get a sim, it's a bit of good fun.
Anyway, if you have EA Access, grab it and give it a look.
