Dipping my toes back into the PC pool...

So it wasn't exactly an intentional direction to start, but I've found my way into PC racing. I don't see myself leaving the Xbox any time soon, so I'll just be a two timing sob for the foreseeable future.

I stopped racing on the console for bit after having some physical issues using the standard controller. That put the idea of looking into a future wheel setup.

I've managed to piece together a rig now and along the way the crossover onto PC racing titles with Steam.

Currently I'm starting out on an Asus ROG G73JH laptop (which in time will give way to a newly built PC), a Fanatec CSL Seat, Thrustmaster TX 458 wheel/pedal set and GTE rim.

I have not had a ton of seat time yet, but just a few hours on FM4 yesterday and I had more fun with it than I can recall. Very pleased with the setup so far and being able to use the rig for both scenarios is just what I wanted.

  • I didn't know the Thrustmaster worked on a 360, do you mean FM5? Regardless, I'm curious to know how it is. I've kinda been itching for another/new wheel setup,I've go to say the old 360 wheel with the bearing mod was hard to beat for the price.

As much as my current computer is a beast I really don't see myself doing much PC racing but if Project Cars is half as good as it looks I might be tempted at picking up something that works for the One.
  • Sorry... yea, FM5. See, been away from forza too long. lol

I'm super pleased with the setup so far. I definitely recommend upgrading the rim though, unfortunately that bumps the cost a bit. I'm sticking with the stock pedals and flappy paddle setup for now. Going to try a cheap mod (>$10) for the brake and save up for the newly announced T500 Pro pedals.

I picked mine up used (patiently waiting for a deal to fall my way on eBay), and I've noticed a few squeaks here and there, but it's pretty smooth and works well so far (only thing I made sure to do was upgrade the firmware via PC before even attempting to plug into the Xbox One.)

Project CARS was one of the big reasons I went the TX route. I also suspect FM6 is going to step it up and land with a bang, so having a decent setup that could handle both without breaking the bank was a huge plus (a little bonus to kick start the purchase didn't hurt either).

I know it's easy to get sucked into big money for hardware and I'm working hard to avoid that. So far I'm right around $210 for the TX 458 wheel base and pedals plus $70 for a GTE rim... think I did pretty good there figuring I saved $70-$100 at least based on what I watched them go for regularly (especially if it holds up for a bit).

I doubt I'll be any faster, but the fun factor seems to have increased.
  • So I see I said TX500 Pro Pedals above, however that is incorrect. The new pedals are the T3PA Pro Pedals from Thrustmaster. I went ahead and placed my pre-order for them this weekend... basically a birthday gift to me. So, they will be replacing my modified stock pedals and going on my current rig.

Speaking of rig, here's what I currently have setup:

This is a great rig to start out with, especially since I needed something fairly portable with a non-center post design. It has quite a bit of adjustability as well as decent stability. I would say that I'm pretty sure I would NOT pay $300 retail for it, but a used one for at least half the price is probably well worth it. Thanks to an offer I couldn't refuse from Darin Gangi w/Inside SimRacing, it was the catalyst that started me down the current rabbit hole.
  • So.... I ended up cancelling my pre order on the TM pedals way back shortly after placing it. Instead I decided to use my Logitech G27 pedals from the G27 I started out with before a TX made more sense across PC and XB1. Figured I might as well use them and just unload the G27 wheel and shifter. I'm glad I did, as these pedals are working out nicely. I did upgrade the brake pedal spring with one from GTEYE to go with the Ricmotech adapter to allow it to connect to the TX base.

Now with FM6 in the mix, this rig is definitely finding more use there rather than on PC... mostly due to just way too little time to run everything.
