Speed to start showing major league baseball?

Further proof that the old days of Speedvision, where you could catch all kinds of racing action on Speedvision 24/7 is long gone. Speed it appears is set to start showing “other” sporting programs including and possibly major league baseball. Now I love baseball, but I don’t want to see it on Speed. I want to see racing.

The downfall began in 2001 when Fox Sports bought Speed and made it the 24 hour Nascar network. Over the years though they’ve introduced reality shows such as Past Time and Pinks moving further and further away from pure racing. Ok, yes those shows have racing and are car related but I think you get what I’m saying.

Now the Wall Street Journal says that Fox plans to expand Speed’s coverage to baseball and other sports. This is because Fox Sports just signed a big eight year deal with the MLB which in order to be profitable for them will mean having to spread baseball across more networks.

The moral of the story here is when a nice niche company like Speedvision gets bought out by a giant mega corporation the product will always get worse and likely cease to exist in the future. This happened to MTV, ESPN, Speed, every radio station ever, etc. Competition is good, and centralized ownership is bad. Always. It’s why Teddy Roosevelt did a lot of trust busting, because he knew that Speed would get bought out….. ok I’m probably getting pretty out there. Still it’s a shame. Speedvision was a great bastion for us race fans and in recent years it tried to return to it’s roots and show less Nascar and more racing. However it looks like the move away from racing is coming sooner then later. Let’s hope some start up network can come in and take over where Speed will leave off.

Barry Apple Festival Part 2: Mustangs

Everyone loves Mustangs, even me. It is clear that the Mustang is the most popular show car out there because I swear you couldn’t throw a baseball at the Barry Apple Festival and not hit a Mustang. That of course is fine by me because while Mustangs are extremely common, Mustang owners are some of the most prolific customizers out there so there is always something new to see. So follow the jump for lots of picture, and trust me this was only a handful of what was on hand. I may get to more this winter as car show season winds down.

2012 Barry Apple Festival Car Show: Part 1 Mopar

Barry Apple Festival Car Show
Barry, Illinois is a small town in the hills of Western Illinois that once a year more than doubles in size with it’s annual apple festival. All of their apple creations are good, but I went there for the car show which is great. Spread out over several blocks are a few hundred cars from traditional hot rods to modern muscle. The variety is excellent and the crowds are huge so good photography was tough but I managed to land a few decent shots. Today’s offering the Mopars of the Barry Apple Festival.

Caterham Superlight R600

Many of you probably know about Caterham, makers of super light track cars and road going kit cars. The super 7 has been a staple in Caterham’s line up forever. It’s retro looks, light weight, and open air cockpit makes for a heck of a driving experience.

The R600 uses a Ford 2.0l supercharged engine to make 279hp and power it’s 1,139lb chasis to 60 in under 3 seconds. Yep under 3 seconds. Of course the R600 is not street legal, but if history tells us anything we will likely see a street legal variant.

The Caterham R600 launches next year just ahead of a new Caterham specific race series which currently has 15 teams signed up to compete. If you want a Caterham you’ll probably have to get it imported. There are a number of “dealers” that will do that for you. Get out your checkbooks because to get one of these here you are going to shell out about $74,000.
