2006 Subaru Forester XS

Country scene meets metro graffiti. Forester right at home.

.

What sort of vehicle do you buy when you need a wagon shape, occasionally drive in muddy or slightly rough terrain, and don’t want the extra fuel usage and stigma of a large 4WD?

For most people, the answer to this question comes in the form of a soft-roader (Note to our North American friends, the term may be “Compact SUV” for you). The majority of soft-roaders, however, do not give you the option of low-range. A lot of them are also dynamically suspect.

That’s where Subaru’s Forester range comes into it’s own.

Not everyone can afford a new car, so we took a look at the used Forester option.

Honda Confirms the 2015 Honda Civic Type R

If you are of my generation the Type R is a big deal. If you are older then I am you probably don’t care, or don’t even know what it is. If you are younger then I am you sadly have never driven in a world when a new Type R mattered. Yes Type Rs were produced up until 2010 in various parts of the world, but here in the states it has been a good while since we got a Type R that was truly good bang for the buck. My generation grew up in the era where hotted up four bangers were the cars to have as kids because muscle cars were too expensive to own and insure. It was a time when the first horsepower war was long over, and the second horsepower war had not yet begun. That meant those of us who wanted speed, performance, and style on the cheap had to look to Japan for our driving kicks. Of course as we have gotten older and our wallets have grown most of us have moved on to more pure sports cars, muscle cars, or hot rods, but when a new Type R is announced that gets our juices flowing and all misty eyed for our youth.

The 2014 Mazda 3, details and speculation

The Mazda 3 has been reasonably successful in the US since it’s launch early this century. At the time of launch it was lauded for it’s sporty styling, nice drive, and decent interior. However over it’s lifespan the Mazda 3 just did not age well and the much meligned refresh of 2010 did not help the Mazda 3’s cause. A complete redesign is in the offing for 2014 so what do we know what should we expect?

What we know:
Gone is the ugly smiling grin of the current Mazda 3. It will be replaced by a more new Mazda 6, CX7 like front end which is sleeker and sportier.
The car will get lighter increasing fuel economy to a targeted 40mpgs.
The car will feature SkyActiv technology.

What we can speculate is that we may see a diesel alternative for the Mazda 3 which would make since with many of it’s competitors are going to be offering the option going forward. We also are sure there will be an interior refresh which the 3 desperately needs. Back during it’s debut the interior was heralded as fresh, funky, and interesting, but now it’s become dated, cheap looking, and quirky.

2014 is going to be an awesome car year from the affordable like the Mazda 3 to the awesome like the C7 Vette. I can’t wait to get my hands on the new Mazda 3 and let you all know how it is.

The Auto World Museum Fulton, Missouri

In the sleepy little town of Fulton, Missouri lies one of the nicest car collections in the state. William Backer was a potato chip maker and a car enthusiast. Over the years he accumulated quite the collection of cars. The museum rotates the cars through out various times of the year and as it turns out we were there for the antique and classic car era which features cars from the pre muscle car era. There was also an exhibit on alternative power plants which was quite neat to see.

A short video on Honda’s forward collision technology

Safety is of course a top priority for most automakers. The consumer demands it and there have been huge leaps in safety technology over the years. While often times car guys lament the added weight and price of safety features, and I’ll admit I’ve been one of those people, I do appreciate a safe car. Someday in the not too distant future it is with in the realm of possibility that there could be no deaths due to traffic collisions. Wouldn’t that be great?

Honda is one of the companies leading the charge with safe technology and for a quick video of their latest Forward Collision warning system hit the jump for the video.
