Why modern COPO Camaros suck

Last week we did an article on the new COPO Camaro and I theorized that it would be nothing but a collector car, sitting in some guys garage collecting dust until they decided to flip it for more money.

Supporting my hypothosis is this COPO Camaro. From the site Bring a Trailer which usually specializes in odd, rare, and interesting for sale listings around the net has allowed this one to sneak through. So what is wrong with this COPO for sale? Well let me start by saying nothing at face value, but if you haven’t clicked that link let me tell you what is wrong with it. The owner there is trying to sell is one year old Camaro for $165,000. Yep, that’s nearly double the asking price of it new. The real kicker, the car has zero miles on it. ZERO. What a douchebag.

So this is my beef with today’s “special editions.” The original COPO Camaro is highly sought after because it was limited release because a limited amount of people wanted it. No one bought the 1969 COPO because it would be collectible. They bought it because they wanted it, they bought it to be king of the street. None of these new COPOs will ever be driven. Which is a shame because I suspect they are pretty awesome. However they are all going right into some guys collection, then to auction in a few years because they think they will make a buck.

What do you guys and gals think about this? Cars are meant to be driven, that is why we celebrate the cruisers, long haulers, and drivers of the world here on IG. We always have and always will.

Tech Tuesday: Spark Plugs, more than you want to know

This week for Tech Tuesday we are talking about spark plugs. They start the fire inside your internal combustion engine. So hit the bump and find out more about this important part of your engine.

Spark plugs ignite the air fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. So let me run down how it works and the terms involved with this part. If the terms get confusing, check out I-G’s super cool diagram debuting today.

I’ll start at the beginning of the plugs job with the ignition wire. From an earlier episode of tech talk, we know that the an electric current has been sent through the ignition wire and it meets the the terminal end of the spark plug. The knob end of the plug is designed to be a firm connection to the wire. It should fasten with a snap and you should definitely feel it connect.

World of Wheels: Muscle cars

Of all the different types of awesome classic cars out there muslce cars are my personal favorite. They represent a time in America where good jobs were plentiful, we worked together as a nation to improve life for everyone, and if you put in a hard days work you could afford an amazing piece of machinery to go tear up the streets with when you got off work. A lot of that is gone forever, but thankfully there are fans like you readers of IG out there who preserve and show these icons of American culture for all of us to enjoy. So today we are going to take a look at what the good folks of World of Wheels: Omaha have for us to admire today.

Above is the Plymouth Warbird, a custom take on the Roadrunner mixing a standard Roadrunner with the superbird wing and a very unique custom paint. It’s super cool.

2013 Shebly Mustang 1000

The 2013 Shelby Cobra is all kinds of awesome. It’s good looking, fast, and highly sought after. If you have one we are a bit jealous because we love it. Apparently someone over at Shelby thought it wasn’t enough. I know when I drove it I thought to myself, you know 600+ hp just does not quite get the job done. Ok that’s a lie never said that, but clearly someone did because Shelby has decided the world needs a version that makes 1200hp. Sure why not?
Mustang Shelby
What you get is more of everything. Better suspension, more boost, more brakes, and more insanity. This all of course comes at much more cost. $150,000 more, on top of the cost of your GT500. So this folks is a $200,000 muscle car. Now here is the thing, you could build a 1200hp Mustang for a fraction of that yourself with aftermarket parts, but this isn’t about the horsepower really. This is a collector car. Sure Shelby will sell a few of these and they will promptly go into a museum or a collection never to be driven and then 30 years from now they will show up at an auction. That is the point of these cars. It’s a shame really. The Shelby 1000 is super cool, too cool to be wasted on some douche who will never drive it.

To further sadden you, if you crunch the numbers on this and many other muscle cars the 1960s and 1970s counterparts cost literally fractions of these. I’m talking accounting for inflation, adjusting for air bags and other safety gobbly gook a Shelby Mustang of say 1969 variety would cost today around $20,000. That tells you how much the car industry is just screwing over buyers today. It’s sad really. The great news is like I said earlier, you can buy yourself a new Mustang for around $30,000 and make it go like hell for not much more then that.

If you want to see more pics of the Shelby 1000, and trust me you do, hit the jump for pics and full press release.
