Ford says 1 in 4 will pay more for more fuel efficiency.

Of course Ford puts it that way, 1 in 4 will pay more! so they can jack up new car prices beyond the already stupidly astronomical price. However what that really tells me is 3 in 4 say go to hell with your higher prices for more fuel efficiency. It’s funny how people spin things to make money.

Ford of course is trying to push it’s ecoboost line of engines as well as the new C max hybrid. The ecoboost has big potential, as do all turbo engines. Direct injection coupled with turbos should prove to be very powerful and fuel efficient as the tech advances. Ford even says that 43% of their buyers have opted for the ecoboost over the standard 5.0 V8.

So what does all this mean? It means Ford is going to keep working on making things more efficient, it also means you are going to pay more for that technology. One thing I think it’s important to keep in mind is that fuel efficiency has much more to do with how you drive your vehicle then what’s under the hood. Sure an old carburetor big block is not going to get 30mpgs like a modern Vette, but you’d be surprised at how your driving habits can drive up your fuel economy.

Snake and Mongoose

Funny car’s golden era in the 60s and 70s was largely fueled by the big money that Mattel brought into the sport because of the Hot Wheels brand. No two stars burned brighter then Snake (Don Prudhomme) and Mongoose Tom McEwen. The on track rivalry was fueled by the off track dollars of Mattel and their playset titled Snake and Mongoose which featured a Cuda and Duster drag racing head to head.

The story was so good that there will be a film on the subject. Many feel this era changed sports marketing forever bringing the stars you saw at the sporting events to your living room in collectibles, toys, and other products.

The movie is a small production but it sounds like they have worked hard to make it accurate and exciting for us race fans. Production has wrapped up and while no release date has been given yet, you can be sure we will let you know when that happens.

When turbos explode

With the popularity of turbos at an all time high it is a surprise we don’t see more of this. I have no idea what caused this but I can speculate and I will. I would say the best chance culprit is a knock off turbo as the big boys typically do all kind of testing so that the housings can take an impeller or turbine explosion and stay in tact. However another possibility would be some shotty welding of the pipe onto an inlet or outlet. Again I don’t know and it doesn’t really matter. Check out the testies of steel on the camera man though as hunks of turbocharger come flying right at him.

An Indy car Steering Wheel walk through with Ryan Hunter-Reay

Indy car and F1 are notorious for having super complicated steering wheels. There are more buttons here then an Xbox controller and all the configurations surely keep the drivers busy. So just what does all that stuff do? Ryan Hunter-Reay explains in this video.

Honoring heros through cars. Fallen Heros Dream Ride

In our continuing effort to raise awareness of those who do good with cars I want to tell you about Marine Lance Corporal Phillip Vinnedge. Lance Corporal Vinnedge had a dream to restore an old Chevy Truck once he finished his service, unfortunately on October 13, 2010 he was killed in Afghanistan. His dream would not die because shortly after his passing his family made the decision to buy and restore a 51 Chevy truck to honor not only Lance Corporal Vinnedge but all fallen heros.

The idea is that this truck will cross the country and finally end up in San Diego where troops will be able to view the truck before they ship out again in late September. After the cross country ride the truck will be used to raise money for organizations such as Marine’s Toys for Tots among others.

Here is a short video showing the truck.

In the coming days I hope to bring you more info on how you can contribute to this cause. Until then check out fallen heros dream ride for more info.
