Mustang and Focus RS to get 2.3L ecoboost engine

It’s all but confirmed that the next Focus RS will get a 2.3L ecoboost engine making 330hp. This is impressive and awesome. The RS will also have big brakes, a tuned suspension and all the other awesomeness that RS models have gotten in the past. Of course it won’t come to America.

However what might come to America is it’s 2.3L ecoboost engine. It’s no secret Ford has been wanting to drop the heavy V6 in the base model Mustang and rumors abound that it’s the 2.3L turbo making 330hp which would be a nice little upgrade to the base model Mustang. We’ll no more later in the year but for now there is something to think about.

Audi A8 to get significantly less expensive

I’ve been on the automakers for a long time now about how outrageously expensive their cars have become. Of course this follows the trend of everything else in world but with the average new car costing 30k and your average person making less then that something has to give at some point. Maybe the automakers are getting it. Nah, I’m not willing to give them that much credit yet but Audi in which is downsizing everything in their line up these days has decided to price the A8 6k cheaper then the current model.

What you get for 6k less is a 3.0 supercharged engine that gets less horsepower and less fuel economy. I can’t figure that one out either. I thought the point of smaller engines was more fuel economy?

Who am I to talk? Audi has been hitting home runs for a long time now so they know what they are doing. If you are interested in the new A8 it should be hitting the dealerships any day now and will cost you about 73k before you start ticking option boxes.

Considering used cars

As an automotive journalist (still can’t say that with a straight face) I often get asked what car would I buy with “x” amount of money. I love those questions because it’s something I ask myself very often. So it came up again earlier with some people that have done well for themselves so their budget is around 50k. Of course they are thinking new and thinking the usual suspects like 3 series BMW or maybe even a 5 series, C class, CTS, Audi, etc. All of course would be reasonable picks but can you stretch your dollar and get a little more car if you buy smart? I asked if they ever considered used and the answer was basically no and they almost scoffed at the idea, but I explained further.

Well that got me thinking about what cars I generally recommend to people and usually I do select used cars because you do get a better bang for your buck. My list probably won’t shock the faithful reader or friend but hear me out and hit the jump for the cars you should consider buying if you are shopping for a car.

Car brands and perceived quality.

Perceived quality is very important for an auto maker and can really help or hurt a companies image. Often times it may takes years or even decades to break these old stereotypes as the big three have been fighting now for years. ALG took a look at perceived quality of the major auto makers and Honda and Lexus came out on top. That’s really no surprise because it’s been thought for a very long time that those two were top notch auto makers.

Ford and Hyundai showed good improvement in the study and it also showed that Toyota’s reputation also rebounds after some much publicized problems of a few years ago. Dodge has also made great strides with an aggressive marketing campaign to correct it’s image. Whether or not these companies actually produce a quality car I guess will have to be settled in another study by another company.

Hit the jump for the full press release from ALG.
