Best Sports Car of 2013

My favorite category to do the awards for is best sports car. It’s not going to be hard to do this year. My love affair for the C6 and now C7 Corvette is pretty well known. When a front engine sports car out performs the super cars that cost three and four times as much it’s impressive. Ok, so you know what our sports car of the year is, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t run down the list of the runners up.

The great thing about a sports car is it has the ability to turn a bad day good with just a blast down a back road. In some cases they can even be practical. Unlike our list of supercars. Sports cars are often less expensive to maintain and modify. Let’s get on with the list.

2013 Supercar of the Year

Supercars are special breed of car that follows form over function, is horribly impractical, stupidly expensive to maintain, and a whole lot of cool. When picking the best super car we throw out all the conventional wisdom we would used to pick something like best sedan. Price doesn’t matter, fuel economy doesn’t matter, and neither does practicality. What matters is a certain X-factor that is hard to describe but you know it when you see it. It’s why we like old muscle cars. The same things I used earlier to describe a supercar and describe most old muscle cars yet we love them.

Aventador

One of our personal favorite supercars is the Lamborghini Aventador. Being a couple years old now it is not this years winning but it has all the right stuff. Deadly good looks, crazy amounts of horsepower, and a price tag that costs as much as a subdivision.

Let’s take a look at this years winner.

2013 Sedan of the Year

We kick off the year end awards with sedan of the year for 2013. A hotly contested category with some old names creating some new favorites. However unlike last year there is no clear cut winner. For this award price matters but only a little as most of the really good sedans are in the $30,000 to $40,000 price range which is affordable to some and obtainable (hopefully) for most someday. With the $30,000 price point being the new $20,000 price point everything has moved up market so we will find most of our list comfortably around $30,000.

Cadillac CTS front

3rd place:
The Cadillac CTS is the exception to my $30,000 statement. It’s good, real good, but it is not our winner for 2013 sedan of the year. A little bigger and maybe a little more chunky but even more refined then the out going CTS which was a fantastic car, especially in V form. The base price of the new CTS is around $40,000 which but well optioned can get pricey. However the base car is a pretty nice place to be. Long gone are the days when just the name Cadillac conjured up a musty old man smell. The CTS is here to stay and it proves the people over at Cadillac know what they are doing. However not good enough to be the best of the year.

Review: Forza Motorsports 5

We love racing simulators and in fact Infinite Garage was largely born because of Forza Motorsports. So in a way we owe a lot to the series. One winter night a few years ago myself, Reno, and some of the other IG contributors were all sitting in a Forza Motorsports 3 lobby talking about reviewing cars. Well a few conversations and a big what the heck later IG was born. We’ve come a long way since then. However we still play the Forza Motorsports series regularly. When the newest installment Forza Motorsports 5 came out I just had to give it a shot.

Chances are if you have any interest in the Forza series you have already read about Forza 5, but most of the reviews out there are from a gamer’s perspective. I’m not a gamer. I’m a car guy who likes racing simulators so I think I may have a different take.

Michael Schumacher in Critical Condition after skiing accident.

Michael Schumacher, who will turn 45 next week, was in a skiing accident today. Details are a bit scant, but what we know is that he has been taken to the hospital after falling unconscious.

We normally aren’t the breaking news type here on IG, but Michael Schumacher is a hero to all of us here on IG. He is, arguably, the greatest driver of all time. The seven time world champ’s career took off at the same time the staff at IG was coming of age. Needless to say, we are all pulling for him and our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. Here’s to a speedy recovery!
