2013 Supercar of the Year

Supercars are special breed of car that follows form over function, is horribly impractical, stupidly expensive to maintain, and a whole lot of cool. When picking the best super car we throw out all the conventional wisdom we would used to pick something like best sedan. Price doesn’t matter, fuel economy doesn’t matter, and neither does practicality. What matters is a certain X-factor that is hard to describe but you know it when you see it. It’s why we like old muscle cars. The same things I used earlier to describe a supercar and describe most old muscle cars yet we love them.

Aventador

One of our personal favorite supercars is the Lamborghini Aventador. Being a couple years old now it is not this years winning but it has all the right stuff. Deadly good looks, crazy amounts of horsepower, and a price tag that costs as much as a subdivision.

Let’s take a look at this years winner.

3rd Place:
The Ferrari La Ferrari
The stupidest name around, but what a car. 949hp, all the gadgetry Ferrari can throw at it and world class handling. It’s one for the ages and a very worthy successor to the Enzo. However it’s not the best super car of 2013.

Runner up:

McLaren P1
The McLaren P1 is the long awaited successor of the McLaren F1 which for a number of years was the fastest car ever made. McLaren decided not to take on the Bugatti Veyron in terms of top speed with the P1, but what they did come up with was nothing short of a masterpiece.

0-60 in under 3 seconds, top speed limited to 218mph, and looks to kill make it a shoe in on this list. The excessive use of exotic materials and it’s 1.1 million dollar price tag only add the lure. Chances are you will never see one, but it’s still satisfying knowing that out there some where is P1 tearing up the highway.

Honorable Mention:
2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
The new Corvette could easily win this category. Ok, it’s not a supercar but it looks and performs like one. It also does it at over a million dollars cheaper then the McLaren P1 mentioned above. It could very well be the greatest car of it’s time, but we will have to let some time pass before that’s sorted out. In the mean time it gets a nod here on our supercar list because it’s just so damn good.

2013 Supercar of the Year

The Lamborghini Veneno
This was a controversial decision here at IG. Some hate the Veneno, some love it. I’m a bit indifferent, but one thing is for sure it does supercar right. The Lamborghini Veneno is just bonkers. 740hp, angular, exotic materials, and the thing just wails. It’s out there, way out there and that is exactly what a supercar should be. So for 2013 the Lamborghini Veneno is our supercar of the year.
