2014 Dakar Rally – Stage 8

Ronan Chabot and Gilles Pillot - Action

It’s the first stage in Chile for the 2014 Dakar Rally.  Not too many images are up on the media sites  today so the recap will be shorter than usual but hit the jump for your daily dose of the 2014 Dakar Rally.

Carlos Sainz - Lifestyle

The Salar de Uyuni, the biggest salt flat in the world, greeted competitors as they entered Chile today.  The motorcycles skirted the edge of the salt for 400km of rallying and the high speed sections frequently looked more like a prepared race course than the traditional Dakar stage.

Cyril Despres managed to capture his first stage win of the rally but he only clawed back 2 minutes on the overall rally leader Coma.  There might not be enough days left in the rally for the Frenchman to get onto the podium.

5317_dak14_stage8_barreda_195_Barreda Bort maintained contact with Coma and remains “only” 38 minutes behind the Spaniard but it is starting to look like even he will have a hard time making up the difference.

MOTORSPORT - DAKAR 2014 PART 2In the cars it was only slightly more exciting as the MINI’s continue to dominate with Al-Attiyah winning the stage just ahead of Peterhansel.  Sainz finished third in his buggy, leaving us to wonder what might have been without last week’s electrical problems, and overall leader Nani Roma lost 9 minutes to the leaders but he retains a 23 minute lead overall.
