Mercedes Benz C63 AMG to drop 6.2L V8 in favor of 4.0L V8

The Mercedes Benz C63AMG is one of the modern greats. I’ve often said the only automaker that makes muscle cars out side of the US is Mercedes and the C63 is a prime example of that. It uses a legendary 6.2L V8 that not only packs one hell of a punch but sounds other worldly. It might be the best sounding engine on the market today.

The current 6.2L produces 451hp and 443lb-ft of torque which rockets the C63 to 60 in 4.4 seconds. That’s super car speed in a sports sedan that weighs north of two tons. That’s how awesome the 6.2L is.

Now word comes that the engine will be replaced in the next iteration of the C63AMG by a 4.0L V8. At first the news is a bit disappointing because the death of the 6.2L has come quickly with most of AMGs line up getting the 5.5L twin turbo motor. The 5.5L is awesome in it’s own right as you might remember from our test of the E63 AMG.

These are of course just rumors from Autocar but Autocar is pretty damn reliable so if they say it, I believe it. We reached out the Mercedes to try and get some answers of our own, but they would only confirm that a new engine is in the works.

I guess the next question is will the new smaller engine result in a different badge? I suspect the answer is not, after all the current C63 is actually a 6.2L engine instead of the 6.3L that one would expect.

As always we will keep you up to date as we get more info on the C63.
