The Chevy Spark is, how do I put it nicely? Quirky looking. It is also pretty cheap at just over $12,000 and loaded with features. These two combination mean it is selling like hot cakes here in America which is a shock. We American’s aren’t exactly fans of mini cars but the spark seems to be on to something.
The Spark’s success has to be due to it’s price and features. It’s competitors start at a full $2,000 more then the Spark and have less standard features. With the spark you get CD, touch screen, 10 air bags, AC, 15 inch alloys, and a fuel economy of 32 in town and 38 on the highway. That is a nice list of features for a car that costs $18,000 less then the average new car today.
The Spark spent most of the summer as an exclusive to 18 major metro markets here in the US, it also had some supply issues due to an auto workers strike in the South Korea. However recently the car has been available for nation wide sales and to date has sold over 6,000 units. That may not sound like much but the car has only been available a few months.
With new car prices soaring it looks like the trend may be toward smaller cheaper cars. The fuel efficiency certainly helps too. We will keep an eye on the Spark and it’s competitors as the year goes on to see who reigns supreme in the mini car market.
