In Europe hot hatches are hugely popular and while some of them fly here in the US largely it’s an underwhelming segment because we just do not get the good examples of the breed. Audi is facing stiff competition in Europe in this segment from the BMW 135i and Mercedes A class AMG so with the new S3 it has had to step it up a bit.
It has done so by putting in a 2.0 TFSI engine pumping out 300hp and 290lb-ft of torque. It will come with an option of either a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed dual clutch transmission. The dual clutch version will rocket you to 60mph in 5.1 seconds and manage 35mpgs. The S3 will only weigh about 3,000lbs so it should be pretty nimble. Of course being an Audi you will get a pretty nice interior with lots of gadgets. Of course being an Audi you will also pay for it to the tune of $50,500.
The big question is if this car will make it state side. It seems the best hot hatches are reserved for Europe only but the US is a big market for Audi, but is the US ready for a $50k+ hot hatch? Time will tell. The S3 goes on sale in Europe next year and if it makes it to the states you’ll hear it here first.

Hatches are not viewed as a luxury item, so I doubt we’ll ever seen the luxury brands sell them here.
