As our year end awards move on we search for the best sports car over $30,000. First let’s define the category which I think is easily done with a quote by our own Reno who said something to the effect of “these are the cars you buy to go fast…..supercars (Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s, etc) are cars you buy to impress your douchebag neighbor, feed your own giant ego, and to coerce socialites into making poor late night decisions. That sums it up. The cars in this group probably won’t make a poster in a kids bedroom, or be in the parking lot of Goldman Sac’s but then again if you are reading this you probably aren’t all that interested in those types a cars anyway because you value speed over asshatery. So for you IGer’s with a bit of spending money here’s the list of nominees and the winner just for you. Best Sports car over $30,000.
The Chevy Camaro 1Le. It’s one bad mother SHUT YOUR MOUTH! I’m just talkin bout the 1LE. The Camaro 1LE aims straight at the Ford Mustang Boss 302 and smacks it right in the mouth. It was over 4 seconds faster around VIR then the Boss and is quite a bit cheaper too. Basically you get some updated suspension geometry and goodies, lighter rims, sticky tires, and all kinds of bragging rights to your Ford buddies. Oh sure there will be people that cry foul that the Camaro isn’t a sports car and maybe we should have put the new Porsche Cockster here, but at twice the price of the Camaro, and slower around the track the Camaro earned the number three spot.
Runner up:
A real American badass from Detroit the 2013 Dodge SRT Viper is a slighty more user friendly version of the snake of old. After a short hiatus it is really nice to see this beast back on the road and being all new this year is certainly a contender of IG’s Car of the Year. You can learn more about the Viper from our launch day article.
2012 Infinite Garage Sports car of the year over $30,000:
The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
The original American sports car now in the last year of it’s sixth generation shocked the world recently when it destroyed all comers around Motor Trend’s Laguna Seca track day. Beating the likes of the Viper ACR, Aventador, Lexus LFA, two Nissan GT-Rs, and everything else thrown at it the Z06 proves that you don’t have to have the latest technology to be the fastest and you don’t have the break the bank either. I’ve long said the C6 Z06 is the greatest car of the generation, and possibly ever. Cheap, fast, reliable, and good looking. It’s what you want in a sports car and that’s why it is our winner of best sports car over $30,000 this year.
