The VW Beetle 65 Years in the US

The VW Beetle is timeless with a following as fervent as any other car out there. It would probably be more appropriate for our own Reno to be writing this article but he is probably busy pushing his own Beetle up a hill so I’ll take the reins here. Everyone has a Beetle story. The first time you road in one, the first time you saw one, so on and so forth. A Beetle is always bound to put a smile on your face. With a huge aftermarket and following each can be made as unique as their owner desires.

Of course in the last decade VW decided the world needed a new Beetle. That car was pretty terrible but never the less it did sell although not like the original. Below is a bit of Beetle history and tons of pics.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Super Bowl Commercial

For some people the Super Bowls is as much about the commercials as it is the game. I don’t know who those people are but to each their own. One thing is for sure, the big auto makers will be pulling out all the stops to get their million plus dollars worth for their ad time. That means flashy cars, meaningful commercials, and celebrities. Who could forget Dodge’s epic commercial featuring Paul Harvey’s speech to the FFA convention or Audi’s prom night commercial? Both all time classics. Chevy aims to have an all time classic of their own featuring the 2014 Corvette Stingray, John Cusack’s commentary, and some footage of the Vette flying around a race track.

We’ve got a look at that commercial after the jump. You might be thinking, why the heck are you guys showing a Chevy commercial? Well it’s a Corvette going around a race track. Isn’t that reason enough? If I were Chevy I probably would have put more of the LT1’s glorious sound track in the commercial but still it’s a great commercial for car guys. Something we don’t get too often in a world of safety ratings, leather seats, and a million cup holders. Every once in a while a commercial comes along that foregoes all that and just shows a cool car doing what cool cars do. That’s what you get here.

The Age of Drag Racing with Dick Landy

Sometimes on a Tuesday afternoon in the middle of winter I have no clue what I’m going to write about for the day. January is tough because after the big Detroit Autoshow that’s it for months. Inevitably or maybe miraculously my phone will beep (actually it’s the road runner meep meep sound) and it will be a buddy of mine sending me a link saying “check this out!”
age of drag racing
Most are neat or interesting videos but few are worthy of sharing. Today however is something really cool. It’s a video from “The Age of Drag Racing.” Now we don’t have the whole film unfortunately but we do have three parts of a film about the film. It features Dick Landy, some sweet old Mopar, and some epic vintage drag racing footage. You aren’t going to want to miss this.

The Great American Pony Ride sets out to celebrate the Mustang by gather maybe thousands of a Mustangs in Normal, Oklahoma then splitting them to ride across the country. One group will head to Charlotte and another to Vegas for some race track activities and a huge celebration.

The thought of a thousand or more Mustangs in one place is pretty awesome. That’s going to be one heck of a party. If you’d like to participate or just read was it’s all about you should hit the jump for more info and some pics of some classis Stangs.

Sunday Commentary: Week in Review

A touch of spring is in the air here in the Midwest but it all comes crashing to a bone chilling reality again tomorrow when the high will be in the single digits. The week in the car world was much slower then the last few. However we managed to soldier on.

Yellow-hot-rod

I really don’t have much to discuss this week. The weeks seems like a bit of a blur and I can’t believe it’s Sunday already. Probably the theme of the week was high prices. We learned the GT-R is going up in price, 1st productions of new cars sold for crazy prices at auction, and some old classics are still holding strong. I had an older friend whose retired and a car collector tell me that he didn’t know how guys my age were ever going to be able to have collections. Quite frankly I don’t either but we’ll figure that out someday. I’m pretty sure an original Superbird is long past anything I could ever pay for one, but there are lots of great less expensive cars out there to be had. It just takes some hunting and that’s the best part.

Let’s review all that was news on IG this week.
